Don’t let the Montgomery summers leave you sweating. Keep your home cool and improve AC performance without increasing your energy costs with simple tasks that keep everything operating at peak efficiency. These easy jobs will help you to get the most out of your HVAC system so you can stay comfortable this summer.
Clean Up the Yard
Clear the area around your outdoor unit for at least two feet in all directions. This includes raking away leaves, trimming back shrubbery, and cutting the grass. If your compressor and condenser unit has to suck air in through dense foliage, it will not operate efficiently.
Keep Your Filter Clean
Change your filter regularly for the best results. The frequency will depend on the type of filter used. This is a quick and easy task that improves your indoor air quality as well as your AC efficiency. Stock up on the appropriate filters for your unit so that you will always have one available when it’s time for a change.
Straighten the Fins
Check the fins on the exterior A/C unit to see if they are bent or damaged. It is easy for branches and other debris to knock them out of place and reduce the efficiency of your unit. If you notice any damage, alert your HVAC pro. Fortunately, fixing bent fins is a relatively simple job. Your technician will then be able to ensure there is no further damage to the system.
Make a Maintenance Appointment
Special repair trips sometimes become necessary, but ideally you should have your HVAC system serviced twice a year for optimum performance. Doing so can actually reduce the need for future repairs. Ideally, these maintenance appointments should be scheduled at the beginning of the spring and fall seasons. However, you should schedule yours now if you have not scheduled a maintenance check recently.
