4 Ways to Stay Warm When the Power Goes Out

DIY generator home portable BIGSTOCK

It’s easy for homeowners in Tuskegee, Alabama, to overlook heat concerns when preparing for a rare winter power outage. You’ll certainly remember it when you’re left freezing without the heaters working! Emergency power outages aren’t exactly rare in the winter, so it’s important to have a plan in place to stay warm and comfortable until the lights turn back on.

Layer Clothing

Adding extra clothing layers is the first defense against power outages. Those extra layers insulate the body and trap heat against your skin, keeping you much warmer.

Layer on a couple pairs of socks, thermal underwear, multiple shirts and a hat that covers your ears. Cozy up wearing all these garments under a warm blanket, and you’ll stay toasty despite the chill.

Block Drafts

Air leaks provide a quick means for cold air to enter your home. And since the heater isn’t working to keep up with the drafts, you’ll be freezing in no time.

Ideally, you should locate drafts before a power outage and apply weather stripping, draft stoppers, or insulating film where needed. It’s a good idea to keep these items on hand in case you need to block an unexpected draft.

Huddle in a Small Room

Smaller rooms with low ceilings and few windows retain heat better, so select a small bedroom and huddle there with your family until the power returns. While inside, cover the door and vents to help trap everyone’s body heat. Choose a south-facing room, if possible, so the sun can warm the room naturally during the day.

Plan Ahead With a Portable Generator

You can’t always prepare for a power outage. But with winter upon us, it’s a smart move to have a portable generator and fuel standing by. Before a winter storm hits, make sure it’s operational.

Following a power outage, check to make sure your HVAC system is working properly. If there’s any issue, call Air Conditioning by Luquire at 334-230-5870. We’ll have it back up and running in no time.
