Water leaks range in severity from a running toilet to a massive flood. Fortunately, there are things you can do to stop most leaks before calling a plumber. Check the following list of things to do when you experience a water leak in your Cecil, AL, home.
Minor Water Leaks
These consist of dripping pipes or faucets and similar small problems. Just turn off the water at all the spots where there are valves in the house. These minor leaks aren’t generally dangerous, so you don’t have to rush to repair them.
Medium Water Leaks
You won’t notice a lot of these leaks because they usually happen behind walls or under floors. Severely leaking pipes are an example that falls into this category. When you notice something like this happening, you should turn off the water meter to prevent damage and schedule a plumbing repair.
Severe Water Leaks
Burst pipes and/or sewer lines are the most common kind of severe leak. They’re dangerous and can destroy your home and/or hurt you by making your home unsafe. If this happens to you, rush with all speed to the water meter and shut if off.
What to Do After the Water Stops
If your home has damage, document it with photographs or videos. Make notes of anything that you’ve lost, especially possessions that have so much damage that you can’t tell what they are in a photo. After you’ve documented everything, call your insurance company and get the ball rolling on a claim.
Your next call should be to a plumber for repairs. Also, even if you haven’t had a flood, it’s an outstanding idea to have a maintenance plan in place to keep your plumbing system up-to-snuff. If you have a flood, adding a maintenance plan after the fact is also wise.
