The area that would one day become the City of Tallassee was first inhabited by Native American tribes of the Mississippian culture more than 1,000 years ago. As European settlers began to encroach on these lands, unrest broke out, which led to the Creek Wars of 1813 to 1814 in which General Andrew Jackson led forces from the Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee militias. After the Creek Indians were removed from the area, the city slowly emerged, and the first post office was opened in 1836.
